Leadership Philosophy
Public education stands at one of the most consequential crossroads in its history. The rise of artificial intelligence, the expansion of school choice, and the rapidly shifting demands of the modern workforce are not distant threats. They are present realities that require present solutions.
I firmly believe the purpose of education is to prepare students to become good humans with the skills to navigate a world that will never stop changing. Yet our current system remains largely designed to measure the mastery of individual facts and classical skills rather than the capacities students will actually need. We owe them something more relevant than that.
Every subject and every teacher deserves to be treated as essential. A student may learn more enduring life lessons in band, theater, or woodshop than in a course designed purely to pass a standardized test. The elective is not the afterthought. It is often the point.
What makes a school work is relationships and structure. When something goes sideways between an educator and a student, the only question that matters is whether that student feels safe enough to work through it without the adult taking their dignity in the process. And when a school lacks consistent structure, children experience it as cognitive dissonance, speaking to us through misbehavior and underperformance rather than words.
Public education does not need to disappear. It needs to reimagine itself, boldly, urgently, and on behalf of the students who need it most.
Professional Journey
Guy Swenson, Ed.D. has built a career not by following a conventional path, but by consistently showing up where something new needed to be created.
He began teaching mathematics in 1997 at McKeel Academy of Technology in Lakeland, one of Florida's first charter schools, driving from Indiana to Florida days after finishing his degree. In 2001 he joined the opening team for Olympia High School in Orange County Public Schools, with no idea that the school he was helping open as a teacher would become the place where his leadership career would take shape. In 2005 he moved to the historic Jones High School in Orlando as one of the first mathematics instructional coaches in the district, at a time when instructional coaching itself was still an emerging concept. Each move was toward something that didn't fully exist yet.
He returned to Olympia as Assistant Principal in 2007 and became its principal in 2012, eleven years after walking in as a teacher. He led the school for eight years as principal before doing what had become characteristic of his career, moving toward something new that needed to be built.
He became the founding principal of Lake Buena Vista High School, a large urban comprehensive high school adjacent to Walt Disney World, stepping into the role thirteen months before the first student walked through the door in 2021, in the midst of a global pandemic. Across his twelve years as a principal, he consistently earned strong school grades, including raising Lake Buena Vista to a B as it found its footing emerging from the greatest disruption in educational history.
That same instinct extends beyond education. When Dr. Swenson became a wedding officiant and founded Guy Thee Wed, he built something that was entirely his own, crafting and telling the unique story of each couple on their most significant day. He has always believed that the most powerful thing a leader can do is tell an authentic story, whether that story belongs to a school, a couple, or a career.
Now, through Index & Atlas, he is once again building something that doesn't yet exist, a service designed specifically to help educational leaders find, shape, and share the story of who they are, so that the world discovers them on their own terms. That, too, feels familiar.

Founder, Guy Thee Wed. Built an officiant business from the ground up, applying the same storytelling, preparation, and presence that defined a career in educational leadership to one of the most significant moments in a couple's life.
Founding Principal, Lake Buena Vista High School, 2020. Led the planning, hiring, culture building, and opening of a large urban comprehensive high school adjacent to Walt Disney World, assuming leadership thirteen months before the first student arrived, in the middle of a global pandemic.
Twelve Years of Principalship, Consistent Academic Results. Across eight years at Olympia High School and four years at Lake Buena Vista High School, maintained consistently strong school grades while building cultures where students and staff felt known, valued, and challenged.
OCASA Board Member and Professional Development Presenter. Serves on the board of the Orange County Association of School Administrators and has led professional development sessions for educational leaders on resume writing and digital professional branding, the latter becoming the catalyst for Index & Atlas.
One of Three Founding Mathematics Instructional Coaches, Orange County Public Schools, 2005. Among the first cohort of mathematics instructional coaches in the district, working at Title 1 high schools at a time when the coaching model itself was still being defined.
Opening Team, Olympia High School, 2001. Helped establish the culture, systems, and community of a new high school from the ground up, an experience that would quietly shape everything that followed.
